Wiggly Worms!
Did you know that worms have no eyes and no ears, but they have 5 hearts? The 4th graders learned about worms this week while studying different types of consumers. We learned that worms are decomposers, and they break down dead plants and animals and put the nutrients back into the soil. After learning about types of consumers and the role of decomposers, we read a book called Diary of a Worm. Even though the book is fiction, we learned a lot of facts about worms. The 4th graders also completed a “Worm WebQuest” and looked at different websites about worms. They saw a real movie of a worm hatching from an egg and were able to “virtually” dissect a worm online. We celebrated a job well done in science with a special dessert simulating the habitat of a worm. Using chocolate pudding, crushed Oreo cookies, and of course, a gummy worm, students made a model of humus and topsoil. It looks gross but it is sure delicious!
