Amazing Apples

This week, we learned about the parts of an apple tree and the different types of apples.  From McIntosh, to Granny Smith, to Gala, to Golden Delicious, we learned that each apple has its own distinct taste and texture.  We had an apple tasting to determine which apple was most popular.  Our class made a pictograph to represent our data.  In social studies, we learned about Johnny Appleseed, who traveled across the United States planting apple trees.  We created a map showing the states where he visited.  Johnny Appleseed was a real person whose real name was John Chapman.  Johnny was born in 1774, before the United States was even a country!  We learned how Johnny Appleseed helped pave the way for pioneers who came after him to settle the west.  We tied our apple week together by discussing some of the “Tall Tales” that have been told about Johnny Appleseed.  From wrestling mountain lions to wrestling with bears, many exaggerated stories have been told about Johnny Appleseed.  We figured out that Johnny Appleseed would have been 238 years old in a few weeks on September 28th!
