4th Grade gets Crabby!

Our "crabitat" (crab habitat) got an extreme makeover this week thanks in part to the "Pets in the Classroom Grant" that we received. Mrs. Kanas applied for the grant at the beginning of the year and our class was awarded a grant for a hermit crab and new tank. The new tank will be used for crabs who are molting (shedding their exoskeletons). Mrs. Kanas thought our crabs needed a new tank and our class earned another 20 paws for good behavior, so she bought us a huge 20 gallon tank.

Here is some information from the "Pets in the Classroom" Website, about why having a classroom pet is an enriching experience.

Pets Enrich the Classroom Experience
•Even kids with no exposure to animals or nature in their home environment can see, feel, touch and make connections to the wide world of animals.
•Observing and caring for an animal instills a sense of responsibility and respect for life.
•A pet brings increased sensitivity and awareness of the feelings and needs of others—both animals and humans.
•Kids learn that all living things need more than just food and water for survival.
•Students will see directly how their behavior and actions affect others.
•Studies show that the presence of animals tends to lessen tension in the classroom.
