This week the Elmwood Park Fire Department visited our school and talked to the 4th graders about fire safety. Here are the tips we learned...
- Check your smoke detector batteries twice a year. (when you change the clocks is a great time!)
- Make sure your family has a meeting spot in case of an emergency.
- Know how to get out of your house in case of a fire.
- If there is a fire, get out as quickly and safely as possible.
- Do not go back inside a fire to look for other family members or to get a personal item.
- If there is smoke, get low and go.
- DO NOT HIDE if there is a fire...GET OUT!
- If your clothes are on fire, stop, drop, and roll.
- If you are trapped in a room, make as much noise as possible. If you can, open a window and wave your arms so the firemen can see you.
- Make sure you call 9-1-1 and tell them your address slowly and tell them there is a fire. (All 4th graders should know their addresses!)
- If you hear the smoke alarm go off and your door is closed, check the door by touching the doorknob or door with the back of your hand.
